Softball Wins 10th Straight With Sweep of Maine

Stony Brook, N.Y. - The Stony Brook softball team extended its winning streak to 10 games with a double header sweep of Maine in the America East opener for both teams on Saturday afternoon at University Field. The Seawolves (13-17, 2-0 America East) came from behind to top the Black Bears (12-13, 0-2) in Game 1 by a score of 4-3, while winning Game 2 2-0.

In the first game, the Black Bears took a 3-2 lead in the top of the seventh on a two-run homer by Brittany Cheney.

The Seawolves answered back in the bottom of the inning when Kristen Brust's bases loaded RBI single to short scored Jamie Neuner to tie the game at three. Two batters later, Candace Jaegge's wild pitch allowed Laura Bradford to score from third to give SB the 4-3 victory.

Maine took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first as Cheney scored from second on a throwing error by Stony Brook starter Angela Andrews. SB tied it in the bottom of the second on a lead-off solo home run by Brust and took a 2-1 lead in the sixth on an RBI double by Hayley Durham.

Andrews (9-12) won her eighth straight game after allowing three runs, two earned, on eight hits while striking out a season-high seven batters and walking none. Jaegge (7-4) took the loss after allowing two runs on seven hits while striking out five.

Brust went 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI, while Durham and Marissa Servello each had a pair of hits for SB.

Cheney went 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI to lead the Black Bears.

In Game 2, freshman Sarah Hoffman tossed a four-hit shutout to lead the Seawolves to a 2-0 victory. The Seawolves picked up a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth when Bradford scored on a double steal and Jane Stein followed with an RBI single to plate Rachael Vogl. Hoffman retired the Black Bears in order in the top of the seventh to seal the victory.

Hoffman (4-5) scattered four hits over seven innings while striking out five and walking one. Sarah Bennis (2-7), who took a no-hitter into the fifth inning, took the loss, allowing two runs, one earned, on three hits while walking four.

The teams wrap up the three-game series Sunday beginning at noon.
