Kristen Brust continued her hot streak, belting a three-run homer while driving in five runners on the afternoon to lead Stony Brook to wins of 12-3 and 5-0 over UMBC on Saturday afternoon at the UMBC Softball Stadium. The Seawolves, who set a school record for wins in a season with 27, have now won seven of their last eight outings to improve to 27-27 on the season and 11-5 in America East play.
In Game 1, Stony Brook jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the second after Brust led off with a single and Hayley Durham followed with her 12th home run of the season. UMBC (24-31, 2-14) tied it up with single runs in the second and third innings, but SB tacked on three more runs in the fifth as Colleen McCarthy scored on an error and Jane Stein added a two-run homer to make it 5-2.
The Seawolves put the game well out of reach in the top of the sixth fueled by a two-run single by Stein and a three-run homer by Brust.
Angela Andrews picked up the victory, allowing three runs, two earned, on eight hits over six innings to even her record at 17-17. Amy Sadowl (9-10) took the loss after giving up six runs, two earned, on six hits in five innings.
Stein went 2-for-4 with four RBI and a pair of runs, while Durham and Brust each added two hits and two runs.
In the nightcap, SB opened a 3-0 lead in the top of the first fueled by an RBI single by Brust and an RBI double by Durham. The Seawolves added a run in the third on an RBI double by Margaret Blair and another in the fourth when Jamie Neuner scored on a bases loaded walk to Brust to give SB the 5-0 edge.
Sarah Hoffman (10-9) earned the shutout win, her second straight, after scattering four hits while striking out five in seven innings. Lauren Nicholson (9-10) took the loss after allowing five runs on 10 hits and three walks while striking out nine batters.
Marissa Servello and Neuner each had two hits and scored a run for SB in the win.
The teams wrap up the series on Sunday afternoon beginning at noon.
