UMBC scored twice in the bottom of the sixth inning and held on for a 6-5 win over Stony Brook in America East softball action on Sunday afternoon at the UMBC Softball Stadium. With the loss, the Seawolves fell to 27-28 overall and 11-6 in America East play, while the Retrievers improved to 25-31 and 3-14.
Stony Brook jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning when Hayley Durham drew a bases loaded walk to score Laura Bradford and Colleen McCarthy followed with a single to plate Marissa Servello.
UMBC got on the board in the second on an RBI single by Kelly Claar and took the lead with a two-run third behind a bair of bases loaded walks. The Retrievers pushed the advantage to 4-2 in the following innning when Sarah Crowell scored on an error.
SB rallied in the top of the fifth inning as Bradford singled, moved to second on a ground out and scored on a triple by Jane Stein. Durham followed with a double down the left field line to plate Stein and tie the game at four runs apiece.
The Retrievers picked up a pair of runs in the sixth on a two-run homer by Kristie Pickeral to push the lead back to 6-4. The Seawolves got a run back in the top of the seventh on another bases loaded walk, but UMBC starter Lauren Nicholson got McCarthy to pop up and struck out Jackie Anderson to end the game.
Sarah Hoffman (10-10) took the loss in relief, allowing two runs on two hits and a walk in two innings of work. Nicholson (10-10) picked up the win, allowing five runs on seven hits and six walks while striking out five.
Bradford went 3-for-4 with two runs, while Durham drove in three runners and Servello scored a pair of runs in the loss.
The Seawolves are back in action when they travel to Hempstead to take on Hofstra in a double header beginning at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday.
