Stony Brook Falls to Maine, 73-60

ORONO, Maine-- Kevin Reed (Yarmouth, Mass.) scored 17 points to lead the University of Maine men's basketball team to a 73-60 victory over Stony Brook University on Sunday afternoon at Alfond Arena. The Black Bears improve to 7-4 on the season and 2-0 in America East play, while the Seawolves fall to 5-6, 0-2 in America East action.

Maine jumped out to an early 13-0 lead, holding Stony Brook scoreless the first 5:33 of the contest. Joe Campbell had back-to-back baskets, including a dunk, during the run.

JonPaul Kobryn stopped the Maine run with a jumper at 14:27. The Seawolves continued to climb back into the game and cut the led to just nine points with a jumped again by Kobryn with 10:43 remaining in the half. Stony Brook cut the Maine lead to five points at the break with a 12-5 run to end the half. Antwan Hardy scored 10 of the 12 points during the run for the Seawolves.

The Black Bears opened the second half with a 11-4 run as they built a 37-25 lead. Ernest Turner (Camden, N.J.) led the run for Maine. He made a layup and was fouled in the process and added the free throw. The next time up the court, he drained a three-point field goal. He then hit a single free throw to scored seven straight points for the Black Bears.

Every time that Stony Brook would cut into the Maine lead, the Black Bears had an answer. The Seawolves cut the Maine lead to six points with a pair of Cory Spencer free throws with 9:03 remaining. The Black Bears answered with a layup by Turner and back-to-back treys by Reed sandwiched around a Kobryn layup to increase their lead to 12 points.

The Seawolves made one last run at Maine, but the Black Bears answered with Chris Bruff (Bloomfield, Conn.) who tallied a career-high 13 points, including seven of the last 14 points for Maine. Bruff finished the game hitting 5-of-6 shots from the field and all three free throws. He also blocked three shots.

For the seventh game in a row, Maine had four or more players score 10 or more points. Reed led Maine with 17 points, including hitting five three-point field goals. He also grabbed a team-high nine rebounds and had three steals. Ernest Turner added 14 points and a team-high five assists. Flavin added 11 points, six rebounds, three assists, three blocks and two steals.

Antwan Hardy had a game-high 20 points for Stony Brook, while Cori Spencer added 11.

Maine finished the game with nine blocks, one shy of the school record. The Black Bears shot 47.1 percent from the floor, while Stony Brook connected 38.5 percent of the time. Both teams shot well from the line as Maine made 85 percent of its shots, while Stony Brook connected for 82.4 percent.
