The Stony Brook University men's basketball team fell to the University of Albany, 63-58, Friday evening in America East action in the Indoor Sports Complex. With the loss the Seawolves fall to 0-7, 0-2 in conference play, while Albany improves to 4-6, 2-0 in America East play.
The Great Danes lead ballooned up to 10 with 12:41 left in the game before the Seawolves caught on fire from beyond the arc. Bobby Santiago drilled consecutive three pointers before Antwan Hardy cut the lead to one after connecting from downtown with 9:23 to play.
Stony Brook continued its hot shooting as Santiago drained another three from the right hand side to give the Seawolves their first lead of the second frame at 52-51 with 8:17 to play.
The two teams would trade leads for the next five minutes until Albany regained the lead behind a free throw by Levi Levine with 2:01 remaining in the contest. Brent Wilson followed with a pair of free throws to give the visitors a 59-56 edge with 1:28 on the clock.
The Seawolves would not go away, however, cutting the lead to one on a jumper by Mike Popoko who was fouled, but missed what would have been the game-tying free throw. The Great Danes would hit 4-of-6 free throws over the final 30 seconds to seal the victory.
Popoko led the way for the Seawolves with 16 points off 7-of-8 shooting from the field along with eight rebounds, while Santiago netted 15 points and dished out five assists. Mitchell Beauford returned to the Seawolf line-up, chipping in with nine points in 22 minutes off the bench.
The Seawolves continued their shooting woes from the free throw line, shooting just 40 percent, missing their only four attempts in the second half.
Levine paced Albany with 14 points while Brent Wilson netted 10 points and pulled down 8 boards. The Great Danes connected on 23-of-38 (60.5) from the charity stripe on the evening.
Stony Brook returns to action when they travel to take on No. 2 Connecticut on Decemeber 28 at 7:00 p.m. in the Hartford Civic Center.
