Box Score

Stony Brook University sophomore Antwan Hardy tallied 13 points, but it was not enough as the St. John's Red Storm defeated Stony Brook, 65-43, this evening at Carnesecca Arena in Queens.

Stony Brook (0-4) used intense defensive pressure to open a 9-1 lead with 15:16 remaining in the first half, lead by five points from Hardy. However, the Red Storm closed out the half, outscoring the visitors, 29-9, to gain a 30-18 lead going into the locker room. Eugene Lawrence led St. John's with eight points in the first half off 2-3 shooting from downtown.

Stony Brook shot just 25% from the field in the stanza, compared to the Red Storm's blistering 57%.

The lead was cut to single digits after a Tre Cunningham fast break dunk with just over 11:30 left in the half. However, the lead ballooned to as many as 20 in the second half, coming at the 7:00 minute mark after a free throw shot by Lawrence. The Seawolf was unable to come up with key stops, as the Red Storm shot an amazing 61% in the second half from the field.

For the Seawolves, Hendrik Feist and Mike Popoko each netted seven points in the contest. Free-throws continued to be a struggle for head coach Steve Pikiell's squad, as the Seawolves managed just 8-18 from the charity stripe.

The Red Storm were led by Lamont Hamilton, who netted 17 points and snagged nine rebounds in the game. Lawrence finished the game with 12 points and Ricky Torres pumped in 10 points in the win.

Stony Brook returns to action when they travel to take on America East foe UMBC on Saturday, December 10, at 7:30 p.m.
