Softball Earns Pair of 2-1 Wins Over Columbia

March 22, 2005

Game 1
Game 2

Stony Brook, N.Y. - Hayley Durham belted a game-winning two-run home run in the opener and Kristen Brust hit a walk-off solo homer in the 11th inning of the nightcap as the Stony Brook softball team swept a double header from Columbia, earning a pair of 2-1 wins on Tuesday afternoon at University Field. With the wins, the Seawolves improve to 6-12 overall, while the Lions fell to 11-11.

In Game 1, Columbia jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when Maiya Chard-Yaron scored on a fielder's choice. The Seawolves answered right back in their half of the inning as Brust hit a one-out single before Durham smacked a two-run shot over the left centerfield fence to make it 2-1.

That was all the offense that the Seawolves would need as starter Anglea Andrews (4-7) would hold the Lions scoreless over the final six innings. Andrews allowed one unearned run on seven hits while striking out four and walking one. Jackie Adelfio (7-4) took the loss despite an outstanding effort, allowing two runs on just two hits, which both came in the first inning, while walking four and fanning six.

In the nightcap, Brust led off the bottom of the 11th inning with a solo shot to center to give SB the 2-1 victory.

The Seawolves picked up a run in the first inning as Jane Stein led off with a single and later scored on the front end of a double steal to give SB a 1-0 lead.

The Seawolves were one out away from the 1-0 win, but the Lions rallied to tie it with back-to-back doubles by Lacie Nelson and Marisa Marconi.

Sarah Hoffman (1-3) picked up her first victory of the season, scattering eight hits while striking out eight and walking none. Megan Ivey (4-6) took the loss after allowing two runs on nine hits while striking out three.

Brust and Stein both went 3-for-5 in the contest to lead the Seawolves at the plate.

Stony Brook is back in action on Wednesday when the Seawolves host Fairfield at 2:00 p.m.
