Despite a second half come back effort, the Seawolves could not muster enough offense to overcome Colgate in a 14-7 loss on Thursday afternoon in Hamilton, N.Y. With the loss, Stony Brook falls to 3-2, while the Raiders improve to 6-3.
Colgate jumped out to a five goal lead in the first half, prompting a Stony Brook time out at 16:42. Twenty seconds later, Danielle Werner won a hard-fought draw control and found Katelin Billups open in front of the cage. Billups fired a shot into the back of the net to earn the Seawolves' lone first half tally. The Raiders put five more on the board and held SB scoreless for the remainder of the half, leading 10-1 at the break.
Amy Taylor beat a slew of Colgate defenders to the cage to rip a shot past Raider goalkeeper Sue Bielamowicz, earning the first score of the half. Marrisa Trachtenberg helped the come-from-behind effort with a tally thirty seconds later and Katie Savino scored on a pass from Kristen Dupuis at 26:30 to make the score 10-4.
Colgate's Megan Janson slipped a shot past Jen Sandtorv before Dupuis found Jill Gridley open for another SB goal at 22:39. Dupuis fed Diana Caroleo for a Seawolf tally with 9:19 to go and less than a minute later, Danielle Werner fired a shot into the back of the net, helping the Seawolves pull within four at 11-7.
But back-to-back Colgate goals from Tara Casey put the Raiders up 13-7 heading into the final four minutes and then Katie McVeigh scored her first of the game with 1:07 remaining to seal the victory for the Raiders.
Dupuis led Stony Brook with three points on three assists, while Danielle Werner chipped in two on a goal and an assist. Seven different goal scorers helped in the effort. Jen Sandtorv stopped 10 Colgate shots in the loss.
The Seawolves return home tomorrow for a 4:00 p.m. game with the Denver Pioneers.
