Stony Brook's bats came alive as the Seawolves belted five home runs en route to a 9-1 victory over Manhattan in six innings in Game 2 of a double header on Saturday afternoon at University Field. The Jaspers (6-8) edged the Seawolves (7-13) 1-0 in in the first game.
In the nightcap, Stony Brook took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first as Kristen Brust blasted a two-out solo homer over the left centerfield fence. Laura Bradford followed with a solo shot of her own in the second to make it 2-0.
Liz Pennino came on in relief in the third and was greeted by yet another solo home run, this time from Jane Stein and SB led 3-0. The Seawolves tacked on another run when Rachael Vogl singled, stole second, moved to third on a ground out and scored on a wild pitch.
The Jaspers collected their only run of the game on a solo home run by Kiera Fox in the top of the fourth to make it 4-1.
The Seawolves mounted a two-out rally in the bottom of the fifth as Suzanne Turek belted a two-run shot to left and Marissa Servello hit an RBI double to right to put SB up 7-1.
SB put the game away in the sixth as Hayley Durham hit the Seawolves fifth home run of the contest, a two-run shot to left center, to make it 9-1.
Sarah Hoffman (2-3) was outstanding on the mound, allowing one run on just three hits while striking out three and walking none over six innings of work. Kristin Gelsleichter (1-4) took the loss for the Jaspers after allowing two runs on two hits over two innings.
Bradford finished 3-for-3 with two runs and an RBI, while Brust and Vogl each had two hits and two runs.
In Game 1, a solo homer by Jen McCracken was all the Jaspers would need as they held on for the 1-0 victory.
The Seawolves managed just one hit off Jill Medea (5-2), who struck out seven and walked two in the win. Angela Andrews (4-8) had a solid outing in the loss, allowing one run on six hits while striking out three and walking two.
The Seawolves return to action on Monday when they host St. Francis College in a double header beginning at 2:30 p.m.
