Seawolves Blanked at New York Tech

April 1, 2005

Box Score

Old Westbury, N.Y. - The Stony Brook baseball team was only able to manage one hit as it was shut out 2-0 by New York Tech on Friday afternoon. Matt Devins broke up NYIT starter Joe Esposito's no-hit bid in seventh inning, but that was all the Seawolves could muster as they fell to 8-14 this season.

New York Tech sophomore Joe Esposito controlled the game from the outset, allowing just two walks through the first six innings before Devins spoiled his chances for a no-hitter in the seventh. The Seawolves put the tying run at the plate in the top of the ninth as Esposito walked Stephen Didsbury with one out, but he closed the game by striking out Devins and getting Isidro Fortuna to bounce into a game ending fielders choice.

NYIT grabbed a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on an RBI groundout from John Atanasio and tacked on their second run in the bottom of the sixth on Kraig Binick's sacrifice fly.

Esposito finished with five strikeouts and just three walks as he improved to 4-0 on the year.

Seawolves starter Brian Murtagh (2-2) took the loss despite an impressive outing on the mound, allowing just four hits and two earned runs while striking out five batters in seven innings of work.

The Seawolves will be back in action at New York Tech again on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. before finishing the three-game series at home at 3:30 p.m. on Monday.
