Stony Brook, N.Y. -
Sarah Hoffman tossed a six-hit shutout and won her eighth straight decision and Hayley Durham crushed a grand slam as Stony Brook swept the season series with Binghamton, winning the final game 6-0 on Sunday afternoon at University Field. With the victory, the Seawolves improved to 14-18 overall and 5-1 in America East play, while the Bearcats fell to 6-14 and 0-5.
Hoffman and Binghamton starter Patty Egan both threw well for the first several innings, as neither team managed a hit until the fourth.
Stony Brook finally broke through against Egan in the bottom of the fifth to jump out to a 5-0 lead. Hoffman drew a lead-off walk and moved to second on a bunt single by Laura Bradford. Egan hit Jane Stein with a pitch to load up the bases, and Kristen Brust was also hit by a pitch, scoring Bradford for a 1-0 SB lead. That brought Durham to the plate, and she belted her seventh home run and second grand slam of the season over the left centerfield wall to make it 5-0.
Binghamton threatened in the top of the sixth as Lauren Verrusio and Rose Barre hit back-to-back singles. Hoffman struck out Marisa DeStasio and got Jessica Dima to fly out to center before allowing another single to Nicole Vitello to load the bases. Hoffman stayed tough though, striking Devin Glezen out to end the inning.
The Seawolves added another run in the bottom of the inning on an RBI single to left center by Margaret Blair, scoring Marissa Servello who led off the inning with an infield hit.
Hoffman (8-3) posted her second shutout of the season, scattering six hits while walking one and striking out six over seven innings of work. Egan (3-5) took the loss after allowing six runs on five hits and three walks.
The Seawolves are back in action on Thursday for a single game at Hartford at 3:00 p.m.
