Box Score

Hempstead, N.Y. - The Stony Brook baseball team found itself in a 7-0 hole after three innings and a late inning comeback fell short as the Seawolves lost to Hofstra, 11-6, on Wednesday afternoon. With the loss, the Seawolves fall to 12-17 this year, while Hofstra improves to 14-17.

After a scoreless first inning, Hofstra exploded for four runs in the second on a two-run home run by Josh Stern, an RBI triple by Eric Balson and a wild pitch that allowed Balson to score. The Pride added to their 4-0 lead with three runs in the third inning as Stern plated two more runs with a triple and came around to score on a single by Steve Oliveri to give Hofstra a 7-0 advantage.

Matt Devins sparked the Seawolves offense in the next few innings as they chipped away at the Hofstra lead. Devins got the Seawolves on the board in fourth, scoring on a single by Isidro Fortuna after opening the inning with a double. He pulled the Brook within three runs an inning later, blasting a three-run homer to make the score 7-4 after five innings of play.

Chris Sipp added an RBI single in the sixth and the Seawolves pulled within a run at 7-6 in the top of the seventh inning on a bases loaded walk by Robert Leonard. Left with the bases loaded and one out, the Seawolves were unable to plate any more runs in the inning and Hofstra put the game out of reach with a run in the bottom of the inning and three more in the eighth for the 11-6 victory.

Devins led the Seawolves' offense, going 3-for-5 with a double, home run, three RBI and three runs scored. Starter Jon Kalkau was tagged with the loss after allowing four runs in 1.2 innings of work.

Stern led a Hofstra attack that saw six players poke two hits on the afternoon, going 2-for-5 with four RBI and two runs scored.

The Seawolves are back in action this weekend when they travel to Binghamton to play a three-game set versus the Bearcats in the second America East conference series of the season.
