VESTAL, N.Y. - Binghamton (12-15-1, 3-3 America East) scored runs in each
of the first six innings and completed a three-game series sweep of
visiting Stony Brook (12-20, 2-4 AE) with a 14-6 win Sunday afternoon at
Varsity Field. In the process, the Bearcats extended their win streak to a
season-high four games and kept a hold of fourth place in the America East
standings.
Junior third baseman Matthieu Bergeron got the
offense rolling with an opposite-field three-run home run in the first
inning and BU plated runs in the second (2 runs), third (2), fourth (4),
fifth (2) and sixth (1) innings to build a sizable margin.
The Seawolves actually outhit their hosts 16-14, but BU produced several
clutch at-bats (four two-out hits and four two-out RBIs) while Stony Brook
stranded 11 runners.
Bergeron's blast was his ninth of the season, which leads the America East.
Eight different BU players drove in runs.
Sophomore pitcher Mike Van Gorder earned his first
collegiate victory with five innings of work. He allowed four runs before
giving way to the bullpen.
Sophomore first baseman Brendon Hitchcock went 3-for-4
with three runs scored, raising his league-leading average to .402.
Sophomore shortstop Justin Smucker and second-year
right fielder Jeff Monaco had two hits and two RBI apiece.
Senior left fielder Keith Ford went 2-for-5 with an
RBI and two runs scored - one on a steal of home in the second inning which
gave the Bearcats a 5-0 lead.
