The Stony Brook softball team snapped its eight game losing streak with a 5-4 extra-innings victory in Game 1, while the Seawolves (15-27) fell to host Sacred Heart 2-1 in Game 2 as the teams split a double header on Thursday afternoon at Pioneer Park.
In the opener, SHU (11-17) took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first on a sacrifice fly by Brittany Uno. The Pioneers cruised through the first five innings as starter Megan Spehar held the Seawolves without a hit until the top of the sixth inning.
SB finally broke through in the seventh frame as Hayley Durham led off with a solo home run to tie the game at one run apiece. Suzanne Turek followed with a double to right center, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Marissa Servello and scored on a double by Laura Bradford. Bradford advanced to third on a single by Ashley Westphal and scored on a groundout by Sarah Hoffman to give the Seawolves a 3-1 advantage.
The Pioneers rallied back to tie the game at three in the bottom of the inning on an RBI double by Becky Cameron and an RBI single by Jazzeline Perez.
After two scoreless innings, the Seawolves struck for a pair of runs in the 10th as Jane Stein and Kristen Brust scored on a two-run single by Durham, giving the visitors a 5-3 lead.
SHU picked up a run in the bottom of the 10th, but could get no closer as the Seawolves held on for the win.
Christina Voth earned the victory in relief, allowing one run on two hits over one inning of work.
In the nightcap, SB took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second as Durham led off with a base hit and later came around to score on an RBI single by Turek.
The Pioneers answered back in their half of the inning with a pair of RBI singles by Cameron and Riley to take a 2-1 lead.
Starter Danielle Mellin made that lead stand up, allowing just one run on six hits while striking out nine in the win. Angela Andrews took the loss, allowing two runs on nine hits while striking out four.
Durham went 4-for-7 on the day with three RBI and two runs scored to lead the Seawolves at the plate.
SB returns to action this weekend when it hosts UMBC in an America East three-game series.
