UMBC avoided a series sweep as the Retrievers held on for a 5-4 victory over Stony Brook on Monday afternoon. With the loss the Seawolves fell to 17-28 on the season and 7-6 in America East action, while the Retrievers improved to 23-24-1 and 6-7.
SB jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second on an RBI single by Jane Stein. UMBC answered with three runs in the top of the third as Amanda Bile scored on an error and Amanda McGhee smacked a two-run single to make it 3-1.
Kristen Brust doubled to lead off the bottom of the inning and later came around to score on a groundout by Christina Voth to cut the advantage to 3-2, but the Retrievers pushed the lead back to 5-2 on a two-run homer by Reilly Ward in the fifth inning.
The Seawolves chipped away at the lead once again, as Marissa Servello chipped an RBI single in the fifth and Rachael Vogl added an RBI single in the seventh, but UMBC's Amy Sadowl got Laura Bradford to ground out and Sara Cerrone to line out to end the game.
Sarah Hoffman (9-10) took the loss, allowing five runs, four earned, on eight hits while striking out one over 4.2 innings. Voth came on to pitch 2.1 innings in relief, surrendering two hits while striking out one and walking one. Sadowl (9-4) earned the win, allowing four runs, three earned, on 11 hits and three walks.
The Seawolves stranded 13 runners on base in the contest.
Stony Brook is back in action on Wednesday when the Seawolves host Hartford in a double header beginning at 2:30 p.m.
