Baseball Opens America East Play With Doubleheader Sweep at UMBC

Baltimore, Md. - The Stony Brook Seawolves (12-15, 2-0 America East) won both games of Saturday afternoon's doubleheader with host UMBC (6-15, 0-2 AE) in both schools America East Conference openers. The Seawolves rallied for a 5-4 10 inning win in Game 1 and scored eight runs in the final three innings to win 9-3 in Game 2.

In Game 1, the Seawolves faced a 4-1 deficit entering the eighth inning but were able to rally with four consecutive singles to plate two runs and pull within a run at 4-3. Isidro Fortuna singled to shortstop scoring the first run and Nick Theoharis singled to third base allowing the second run to cross the plate.

Will Brumfield came up big for the Seawolves in the top of the ninth, blasting a leadoff home run over the left centerfield wall to tie the game 4-4. The Seawolves would win the game in the 10th as Andrew Larsen doubled to left centerfield to lead off the inning, moved to third on a balk and scored on an infield single by Fortuna.

Jon Lewis started for Stony Brook, going 8.0 innings allowing seven hits and four runs, three earned.Lewis struck out 10 Retriever batters and walked one. Nick Abel earned the win to improve to 1-3, allowing just one hit in the final two innings. Larsen went 4-for-5 with three runs scored to lead the Seawolves offensively.

In Game 2, Matt Devins broke open a 1-1 game in the fifth inning with a three run home run, and the Seawolves would blow the game open with eight runs over the final three innings.

Seawolves' starter Brian Murtagh (3-2) threw 4.0 innings to pick up the win, allowing just two runs on two hits.Tom Pennino went 4-for-4 to lead a 15-hit Stony Brook attack. Larsen added a 3-for-5 effort to go a combined 7-for-10 on the day.

Stony Brook and UMBC will complete the three-game series at 12 p.m. on Sunday.
