Game 1
Game 2
Stony Brook, N.Y. -
Stony Brook received a pair of outstanding pitching performances from Angela Andrews and Sarah Hoffman and the Seawolves got their bats going as they swept a double header from Binghamton, earning an 11-2 victory in six innings in Game 1 and a 3-1 win in Game 2 on Saturday afternoon at University Field. With the wins, SB improves to 13-18 overall and 4-1 in America East play, while the Bearcats fall to 6-13 and 0-4.
In the nightcap, Andrews took a perfect game into the top of the seventh inning before the Bearcats came through with a pair of hits. Rose Barre led off with a double to right field that was just out of reach of a diving Ashley Westphal to drop in for Binghamton's first hit of the game. Barre moved to third on a groundout by Marisa DeStasio and then scored on a groundout by Jessica Dima to make it 3-1. Nicole Vitello followed with a single to center field, but Andrews got Devin Glezen looking to end the game.
The Seawolves got on the board in the bottom of the third inning as Rachael Vogl was hit by a pitch, moved to second on a groundout by Laura Bradford, advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Westphal and scored on an RBI single by Jane Stein.
Suzanne Turek hit a pair of solo home runs, one in the fourth and another in the sixth, to put the Seawolves up 3-0.
Andrews (5-12) allowed one run on two hits while striking out four and walking none over seven innings of work to earn the victory. Patty Egan (3-4) took the loss after giving up three runs on four hits while walking three and striking out two over six innings.
In the opener, the Seawolves' bats came alive out of their recent slump, striking for four runs on six hits in the bottom of the first inning. Westphal, Stein and Kristen Brust hit back-to-back-to-back one-out singles to load the bases. Hayley Durham drove in Westphal with a sacrifice fly to make it 1-0. Turek then cleared the bases a three-run shot over the left center field fence and SB led 4-0. Back-to-back doubles by Stein and Brust put the Seawolves up 5-0 after two innings.
The Bearcats got two runs back in the top of the fourth inning on a two-run homer by Christina Quijano to make it 5-2.
Stein belted her fifth home run of the season in the bottom of the fifth and Durham crushed a grand slam to highlight a five-run sixth inning and end the game.
Sarah Hoffman (7-3) won her seventh straight decision, allowing two runs on five hits while striking out six and walking none over six innings. Katie Hansen (2-7) took the loss after surrendering 11 runs, six earned, on 12 hits and three walks while striking out four.
Stein went 3-for-3 with three runs and an RBI, while Durham drove in five runners in the contest.
The two teams wrap up the three-game series on Sunday with a single game beginning at noon.
