Stony Brook, N.Y. -
Junior Brian Murtagh threw a complete game six-hit shutout to lead the Stony Brook baseball team to a 4-0 victory over Maine on Saturday afternoon at University Field. The victory improves the Seawolves' record to 19-23 overall, 7-6 in the America East, while Maine falls to 25-13, 8-5.
Stony Brook staked Murtagh to an early lead, taking a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on an RBI single by Tom Pennino and adding a run an inning later on a sacrifice fly by Matt Devins to take a 2-0 advantage after two frames.
The Seawolves threatened in several innings but weren't able to plate another run off Maine starter Steve Richard until the sixth when Devins plated another run with his second sacrifice fly of the day and Isidro Fortuna came through with an RBI single to plate Jon Pasieka and put the Brook on top 4-0.
Murtagh was stellar on the mound, keeping the Black Bears hitless for the first three innings of the game and surrending just six hits on the afternoon. He struck out four without allowing a base on balls to earn his team leading fifth win of the season. Pennino and Pasieka each went 2-for-4 while Devins drove in two runs to lead the Seawolves at the plate.
The teams will complete the three-game series tomorrow with a doubleheader starting at noon.
