Stony Brook, N.Y. -
The Stony Brook baseball team lost a pair of games to Maine, 6-2 and 11-0, at University Field on Sunday afternoon. With the losses, the Seawolves fall to 19-25 overall, 7-8 in the America East, while Maine improves to 27-13, 8-5 in the conference.
Game 2 began as pitcher's duel between Stony Brook starter Tom Koehler and Maine's Troy Martin, but Maine broke through with three runs in the fourth inning on three hits and some shakey Seawolves defense. Joe Hough opened the inning with a single and advanced all the way to third on an errant pickoff attempt by Koehler before being plated on a sacrifice fly by Ryan Quintal. Joel Barrett singled one batter later and came around to score the second run of the inning on a double by Adam Izaryk. Matt Devins' attempt to throw out Barrett at the plate got away from catcher Tom Pennino, which prompted Izaryk to try to advance to third base. Koehler, who backed up the play at the plate, attempted to throw out Izaryk at third, but his throw sailed into left field, allowing Izaryk to come home and put the Black Bears up 3-0.
Greg Creek lifted a two-run home run over the right field wall in the fifth to extend the Black Bears lead to 5-0. Maine added to its lead an inning later, going up 7-0 on an RBI double by Curt Smith and a run scoring single by Mike Ferrigi. Creek's second blast of the day, a solo shot, highlighted a four-run seventh inning as the Black Bears went up 11-0.
Koehler (2-1) suffered the loss, allowing six runs (five earned) on eight hits in five innings of work.
After the Seawolves took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning of Game 1 on a two-out single by Nick Theoharis to plate Isidro Fortuna, but Maine batted around in the third to plate four two-out runs and take a 4-1 lead. Barrett's RBI single was the first of four two-out hits as he drove home Creek to tie the game at one. Izaryk and Smith then followed with back-to-back RBI doubles to right field and Ferrigi drove home the fourth run of the inning with a single through the left side of the infield.
The Black Bears added two unearned runs in the fifth as Matt McGraw lifted a fly ball to left field with two outs that was misplayed for a three base error and scored Izaryk, who reached on a single. McGraw came home one batter later on a single to left by Ferrigi to put the Black Bears up 6-1.
The Brook added a run in the bottom of the sixth on a pinch-hit single Stephen Didsbury for the 6-2 final.
Jon Lewis (4-4) suffered the loss despite striking out six in his fifth complete game of the season while Greg Norton improved to 8-2 and Scott Robinson picked up his eighth save. Matt Devins went 2-for-4 to lead the Brook at the plate in the opener.
The Seawolves are back in action on Tuesday when they travel to Army to take on the Black Knights at 3:30 p.m.
