Softball Earns Doubleheader Split with Maine

Orono, Maine - The Stony Brook softball team earned a doubleheader split with Maine on Monday, falling 2-0 in Game 1 before winning 6-3 in Game 2. With the split, the Seawolves move to 20-34 overall and 10-10 in America East play and enter the conference tournament as the No. 4 seed, while the Black Bears stand at 16-24 and 10-8.

In the nightcap, Stony Brook took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second as Ashley Westphal singled, stole second and scored on an RBI single by Laura Bradford.

The Seawolves extended their lead in the fifth when Jane Stein was hit by a pitch and Bradford and Kristen Brust each singled to load the bases for Hayley Durham, who belted her third grand slam of the season to make it 5-0.

Maine got on the board with two runs in the bottom of the inning on a two-run double by Amy Kuhl to cut the lead to 5-2. Both teams added single runs in the seventh to make the final 6-3.

Angela Andrews (6-19) earned the victory after allowing three runs, two earned, on eight hits while striking out four and walking one over seven innings. Candace Jaegge (2-7) took the loss after tossing 5.1 innings, allowing five runs on eight hits while striking out three and walking one.

In the opener, the game was scoreless through 5.5 innings before the Black Bears broke through with a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth behind RBI singles by Lindsay Tibbetts and Molly McKinney.

Sarah Hoffman (10-14) took the loss, surrendering two runs, one earned, on six hits while striking out four and walking none over six innings. Sarah Bennis (9-8) picked up the shutout victory, allowing three hits while striking out five and walking two over seven innings.

The Seawolves are back in action when they host the 2005 America East Championships May 12-14 at University Field. SB will take on regular season champion and No. 1 seed Albany in a first round game beginning at noon on Thursday.
