Women's Soccer Claims 2005 Holiday Inn Express Invitational Crown

The Stony Brook women's soccer team claimed the 2005 Holiday Inn Express Invitational title defeating St. Francis (Pa.), 2-0, this afternoon at LaValle Stadium.

The Seawolf offense was paced by sophomore midfielder Tiffany Fasullo, who netted a pair of goals, on her way to earn tournament most valuable player.

Stony Brook (3-5-1), which won its second consecutive Holiday Inn Express Invitational this afternoon, dominated the Red Flash. The Seawolves offense outshot their opponents 18-6, including a 10 to 2 advantage in the first stanza, while the defense held the Red Flash without a corner kick all day.

Fasullo netted her first goal of the game just 4:18 seconds into play when she headed in a Chelsea Van Horn corner kick to give the Seawolves a 1-0 advantage.

After freshman Brittany Benthin was brought down in the box by the Red Flash goalkeeper, Fasullo calmy netted the penalty kick at the 71:28 mark to seal the victory.

Senior goalkeeper Cindy Bennett made four saves in the match, en route to being named to the All-Tournament team. Bennett was joined by teammates Marisa Nucci and Kirsandra Seaton on the squad.

The Seawolves return to action when the travel to take on Central Connecticut State on Thursday, September 22. Kick-off is slated for 4:00 p.m.

Sacred Heart 3, Stetson 0

Senior Erica Rico led the way with two goals and an assist as the Sacred Heart Pioneers topped Stetson, 3-0, this morning in first match of the day at the Holiday Inn Express Invitational.

The Pioneers were runners-up in the 2005 Holiday Inn Express Invitational.

Rico netted her first goal of the match only 2:53 seconds into the game as her shot deflected off a Hatter defender and into the back of the net. Rico netted her second goal of the game after she directed the ball into the goal off a free kick from 40 yards out by Alyssa Long.

Junior Lisa Burbige added an insurance goal off a feed from Rico at the 51:51 mark to put Sacred Heart up for good. Ashley Mocarski saved five shots on the afternoon for the Pioneers, while her counterpart April Eilering saved four shots for Stetson.
