Mitchell Beauford scored a career-high 24 points to lead five Seawolves in double-figures as Stony Brook defeated UMBC 75-65. With the win the Seawolves improve to 4-15 overall and 2-7 in America East play. The loss drops the Retrievers to 7-12 and 3-5 in conference play.
Beauford netted 15 of the Seawolves' 34 first-half points as Stony Brook and UMBC entered the locker room all knotted up at 34.
"Mitchell had everything working and put together a super effort to help us to victory," said head coach Steve Pikiell. "More importantly, I am really proud of our guys and thrilled to see their hard work pay off with a victory today."
Stony Brook took the lead 40-39 with 16:32 left in the half, off of a Tre Cunningham layup and Stony Brook never looked back. Following a Solomon Bamiro dunk, the Seawolves built their lead to 11 at 55-44. UMBC cut the lead to five with 6:38 to play in the contest, but Stony Brook hit seven of its nine free-throws down the stretch to hold on for the 75-65 victory.
Beauford led the way for Stony Brook with a game-high 24 points, Cunningham added 14, Antwan Hardy poured in 12 while grabbing eight boards. Bobby Santiago netted 11 points with seven assists and Bamiro scored 11 as the Seawolves tallied a season-high 75 points.
Chris Pugh paced the Retriever offense with 16 points, Brian Hodges added 14 and Jay Greene netted 11 points in the loss.
Stony Brook was without Mike Popoko and Andrew Goba who sat out due to injury.
The Seawolves return to action on Wednesday, February 1 when they hit the road to take on conference foe Albany. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
