Stony Brook, N.Y. -
On a night when 2,701 fans saw former Stony Brook great and Minnesota Twins closer Joe Nathan have his #22 Jersey retired at halftime on Joe Nathan Night, the Stony Brook men's basketball team fell to Long Island-rival, Hofstra, 73-57 at the Indoor Sports Complex. The Seawolves are 3-5 while Hofstra is 5-3.
"I was pleased with our effort tonight in the basketball game, but disappointed with our turnovers," said head coach Steve Pikiell. "It is very nice to have Ricky Lucas back in the lineup, but tonight we really needed a secondary scorer to step up."
Stony Brook jumped out to an early 7-2 lead after Eddie Castellanos hit a jumper at the 16:14 mark. Hofstra took the lead 11-9 when Zygis Sestokas hit a three-pointer with 12:52 left, giving Hofstra a lead they never relinquished. Over the next three minutes, the Pride improved their lead to 20-9, capping an 18-2 run. The Pride maintained their lead throughout the first stanza and headed into the locker room with a 31-21 advantage.
Hofstra shot a blazing 65 percent in the second half en route to its fifth victory in a row. The Seawolves got as close as nine after a pair of Ricky Lucas' foul shots that cut the lead to 62-53.
Lucas, who was named America East Player of the Game, finished with 18 points and seven rebounds, in his first game since missing two contests with a sprained ankle.
Antoine Agudio led four double-digit scorers on Hofstra with 19 points including 4-6 shooting from downtown.
The Seawolves return to action when they hit the road to take on NJIT on Monday evening. Tip-off is slated for 7 pm.
