Final Stats
The Stony Brook University softball team split a pair of games at Manhattan this afternoon. In the first game of the day, Stony Brook fell 6-1, as the Seawolves committed four errors and were held to just four hits in the contest. The second game proved to be another story, as Stony Brook erupted for seven runs in the first two innings to back Sarah Hoffman's three-hit shutout, to win the game 8-0 in five innings.
With the split, the Seawolves improve to 9-8 in the 2006 campaign.
The Jaspers used a pair of Stony Brook errors to jump out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning in the first game. The Seawolves would score their lone run of the game in the fourth inning when Hayley Durham cranked a solo shot over the left field fence to cut the lead to one.
However, Manhattan would answer back, tacking on two runs in the bottom of the fourth and sixth inning to put the game out of reach.
Angela Andrews suffered the loss for Stony Brook, giving up six runs off eight hits while striking out five. Durham went 2-2 in the game, while Molly Kestranek and Sarah Hoffman added the only other hits in the game for the Seawolves.
In the second game of the day, the Seawolves got back on track, plating three runs in the top of the first inning. After Kelsi Fanelli lead off the game with a walk, Ashley Westphal reached on a sac bunt when Jasper pitcher committed an error, moving Fanelli to third. Westphal stole second base and Fanelli scored on the ensuing error by the cather attempting to gun out Westphal at second. Durham knocked home Westphal after she blasted a double to right center and would score herself when Marissa Fleury drove a single up the middle to give the Seawolves a 3-0 lead.
Samantha Posey led off the second by belting her first home run in a Seawolf uniform to go up 4-0. With the bases juiced later in the inning, the Jaspers would walk in two runs as Laura Bradford and Westphal each crossed the plate. Suzanne Turek would be the Seawolves fourth run of the inning when Sara Cerrone slapped a single up the middle to put Stony Brook up 7-0.
The Seawolves would finish the scoring in the fourth as Cerrone picked up her second RBI of the day, driving in Turek once again, giving SB an 8-0 advantage.
Sarah Hoffman pitched a gem allowing just three hits and striking out a trio. Six Seawolves registered a hit in the game and Durham, Fleury, and Cerrone each drove in two runs on the afternoon.
Stony Brook returns to action when they play Columbia on Thursday for a 2:30 p.m. start.
