The Stony Brook baseball team swept a doubleheader over Bucknell on Sunday at University Field. The Seawolves opened the day with a 5-2 win and had their bats wake up in game 2, winning 10-6. With the two wins the Seawolves move to 3-14 on the season and Bucknell falls to 6-12.
Stony Brook got things going in the second inning of game 1, as Isidro Fortuna ripped a lead-off triple. Peter Milani followed with an RBI single to give Stony Brook the early 1-0 lead. The Seawolves added another run in the third, when a Chris DiBiaso double scored Keith Fier from second base. The Seawolves would open up a five run lead in the fourth, when Rob Leonard tripled in a pair of runs and later scored on a DiBiaso ground out.
Bucknell chipped away and added runs in the sixth and seventh, but Gary Novakowski came out of the pen to close out the seventh for his first save of the season.
Kirs Bakey (1-3) picked up his first win of the season, striking out six in 6.1 innings of work. Leonard finished the game 1-for-3 with two runs driven in and one scored.
In game 2, the two teams combined for a total of 22 hits and 16 runs. Stony Brook opened the scoring in the second, when Jon Pasieka delivered the two-out RBI single.
Bucknell answered in the top of the third, with a sacrifice fly off the bat of Kyle Walter. The Seawolves added three more in the bottom of the frame, when Andres Perez ripped a two-run double to the right-field gap and later scored on a Milani RBI single.
Stony Brook broke the game open in the fifth inning, as the Seawolves were able to plate four runs. Chris Sipp opened the inning up with a double to right and scored the next at-bat off of a Perez double. With one out and the bases loaded, Pasieka dropped down a sacrifice bunt to plate Perez and DiBiaso followed with a two-RBI single.
Bucknell scored three in the seventh to make the game 9-6, but Stony Brook added another insurance run in the eighth when Fier roped an RBI double to plate DiBiaso. Nick Abel threw a perfect ninth as Stony Brook held on for the 10-6 win.
Tom Koehler (1-2) picked up the win for Stony Brook, as the hard-throwing righty gave up six runs in 6.2 innings of work. Abel picked up his first save of the season, throwing 2.1 innings of hitless baseball, striking out two.
DiBiaso paced the Stony Brook offense in game 2, going 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored. Perez finished the game 2-for-4 with two doubles, three RBI and two runs scored.
The Seawolves return to action on Wednesday, March 29 when they travel to take on Fordham. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 P.M.
