The Stony Brook baseball team committed four errors and allowed three unearned runs to cross the plate in a 5-4 loss to the New York Institute of Technology on Friday afternoon at University Field. The loss snaps the Seawolves four-game winning streak and drops SBU to 4-15 on the season. With the win NYIT improves to 8-8.
Behind three errors in the opening frame, NYIT was able to jump out to an early 3-0 lead. Stony Brook would cut the lead to one in the bottom of the fifth, when Robert Leonard got things going for the Seawolves with a leadoff triple to dead center. Jon Pasieka followed with an RBI single up the middle and later scored on a Keith Fier RBI single.
The Bears would tack on two insurance runs, one in the sixth and one in the seventh, to head into the ninth inning with a 5-2 lead. Isidro Fortuna sparked a ninth inning rally, when the senior led off the frame with a single. With two-outs and runners on first and second, Chris DiBiaso ripped a triple to right-center field to plate Fortuna and Leonard. Closer Eric Johnson was able to coerce a groundout to get the Bears out of the jam and clinch the game.
Matt Restivo (0-3) picked up the loss for Stony Brook, pitching five solid innings, allowing three unearned runs and striking out two. Leonard paced the Seawolf offense, going 3-for-4 on the day with a triple and two runs scored. DiBiaso was 2-for-4 with a triple and two RBI.
The Seawolves return to action on Saturday, when they travel to take on NYIT. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 P.M.
