The Stony Brook University softball team opened up America East Conference play on Saturday afternoon splitting a pair of games against the University of Maine at University Field. The Seawolves rallied in the first contest to win 5-3, while fell in the second game of the day, 3-0.
With the split, the Seawolves record improves to 15-13, 1-1 in conference play.
Paced by the bat of Suzanne Turek, the Seawolves rallied to take the first game of the doubleheader, 5-3. Turek was outstanding from the plate, going 3-3 with two home runs and a double.
The Black Bears tallied two runs in the first inning as they came out of the gate registering four hits. Amy Kuhl's two RBI single gave the visitors a 2-0 advantage. Stony Brook would chip away at the lead as they plated a run in the bottom of the first when Kelsi Fanelli came around to score on Marissa Fleury's RBI single.
The Seawolves would knot the game at two runs a piece when Turek led off the second inning blasting a home run over the right field fence. Maine would regain the lead in the fourth as Kristie Hawkin's RBI single scored Christina Belmonte to go up, 3-2.
However, Turek responded once again in the bottom of the fourth, cracking a shot over the left field fence, tying the game at three.
In the bottom of the sixth, Stony Brook took their first lead of the game as they plated two runs and took advantage of a Maine error to go up 5-3. Turek once again produced from the plate, slapping a double to right field with two outs. Sarah Hoffman then blasted a double of her own to score Turek. An error by Maine would score Hoffman during Kelly Oberto's at bat to go up 5-3.
Angela Andrews was victorious on the mound, scattering seven hits while striking out four to improve to 8-5 on the year.
In the second game, Maine rode an outstanding pitching performance by Jenna Balent, who threw a two-hit shutout, striking out seven Seawolves in the contest. Maine tallied a run in the first inning and plated two more in the third. An RBI single in the first and a two-run homer in the third proved to be the only scoring of the contest.
Turek and Molly Kestranek registered the only hits for Stony Brook, while Sarah Hoffman suffered the loss, allowing ten hits and striking out a pair in the game.
The Seawolves wrap up the series with the Black Bears on Sunday morning at 11:00 a.m.
