The Stony Brook University softball team split a doublheader with the University of Hartford this afternoon in America East Conference play in West Hartford, Conn. Stony Brook dropped the first game of the day, 5-4, before coming back to take the second game of the twinbill, 3-2.
With the split, the Seawolves are now 18-18, 4-4 in conference play.
In the first contest of the afternoon, the Seawolves managed to plate three runs in the second inning, despite being thrown out at home on two occassions. Hayley Durham led off the inning with a double and Suzanne Turek followed with a single as they would both be thrown out at the plate later in the inning. The Seawolves recieved runs from Molly Kestranek, who reached on a fielder's choice and later scored on an error. Samantha Posey crossed the plate on a wild pitch and an Ashley Westphal RBI single scored Kelly Oberto to give the Seawolves a 3-0 lead.
Stony Brook went up 4-0 when Turek crushed a home run to left field in the third inning. The Hawks would respond, scoring two runs in the bottom of the inning on a pair of RBI singles to cut the lead to 4-2. Hartford would tie the game up on an RBI single and an SB error.
The Hawks would win the game in the bottom of the seventh inning on an RBI single with one out to win, 5-4.
Kelsi Fanelli went 2-3 in the game while Turek finished 2-4.
Angela Andrews suffered the loss as she scattered eight hits while allowing just one earned run and striking out three.
In the second game of the day, both teams plated runs in the first inning. Ashley Westphal doubled down the right field line and would later come around to score on a Hayley Durham RBI single to left center. The Hawks tied the contest up after an RBI single. Hartford would take the lead in the game in the third after another RBI single, going up 2-1.
However, the Seawolves capitalized in the fifth tacking on two runs to finish the scoring in the game. Fanelli led of the inning with a crushing solo homer to tie the game at two runs a piece. A Molly Kestranek sac fly proved to be the difference in the game as it scored classmate Marissa Fleury, giving the Seawolves a 3-2 advantage.
Westphal finished the game 2-4, while Turek went 2-3, and Fanelli, Kestranek, and Durham collected the RBI's for the Seawolves.
Sarah Hoffman was terrific on the mound, allowing just one earned run with giving up six hits and striking out six Hawks.
The Seawolves continue their road trip when they take on America East Conference foe Vermont in a three-game series this weekend. First pitch is scheduled for Friday at 2:00 p.m.
