The Stony Brook University softball team split a non-conference doubleheader at St. Peter's this afternoon. In the first game of the day, the Seawolves fell in five innings, 11-3. The Stony Brook bats awoke in the second game as they were victorious, 8-4.
With the split, Stony Brook stands 20-21 on the season.
In the lidlifter St. Peter's plated four runs in the second and third inning to take a commanding 8-0 lead after three innings of play. The Peacocks hit two home runs in the second inning to highlight the scoring.
The Seawolves plated their first run of the contest when Molly Kestranek's sac fly scored Suzanne Turek who had previously led off the inning with a double to right field. Stony Brook continued to rally as the Seawolves tacked on two more runs in the fifth. Kelly Oberto crossed the plate on an Ashley Westphal sac bunt, and Kelsi Fanelli scored on a Hayley Durham RBI single to cut the lead to 8-3.
However, St. Peter's would add three runs in the bottom of the fifth to end the game.
Durham finished the game 2-3 with an RBI, while Turek, Fanelli, and Oberto accounted for the only other Seawolf hits in the game.
Sarah Hoffman lasted 1.2 innings, allowing three earned runs off six hits. Christina Voth pitched the final three innings, giving up eight earned runs off nine hits.
The Seawolves struck first in the nightcap, plating the first run of the game in the third inning. Laura Bradford led off the inning with a single and Fanelli followed with a bunt single to first base. After Westphal's sac bunt advanced the runners, Durham's RBI bunt single scored Bradford, putting the visitors up, 1-0.
The Peacocks responded with two runs in the bottom of the third to regain the lead after a two-RBI single.
Stony Brook would not go away as Turek smashed a two-run shot in the fifth to give SB a 3-2 edge.
Behind the bat of Kestranek, the flood gates opened in the sixth as the Seawolves scored five runs off six hits to break the game wide open. Kestranek led off the inning with a solo shot. A pair of two-RBI singles by Westphal and Turek accounted for other RBI in the inning as the Seawolves took a commanding 8-2 lead.
St. Peter's two-run rally in the seventh wasnt enough as SB went on to capture a 8-4 win.
Turek was terrific in the contest, going 2-4 with four RBI while Durham went 3-4 with two runs scored. Westphal picked up a pair of RBI going 1-3.
Angela Andrews went the distance to pick up the win for the Seawolves, allowing four earned runs off 10 hits.
The Seawolves return to University Field after a 12-game road swing to take on America East foe Albany. First pitch of a doubleheader on Saturday is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
