Stony Brook, N.Y. -
Stony Brook used an outstanding all-around team effort as the Seawolves upset first place New Hampshire in America East women's lacrosse action on Friday afternoon at Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium. The win, which was the program's first ever over the Wildcats, improved the Seawolves to 8-6 overall and 3-1 in America East play, and moves them into a three-way tie for second place with Boston University and UMBC. UNH fell to 10-5 and 4-1.
Five Seawolves - Carlee Buck, Danielle Werner, Amy Taylor, Kaitlin Leggio and Jill Gridley - scored three times each for Stony Brook, while Buck added two assists and Werner grabbed six draw controls. Jen Sandtorv (8-4) was outstanding in goal, turning away 12 shots to earn her eighth victory of the season.
The Seawolves came out strong, jumping out to a 4-0 lead just under nine minutes into the contest on goals by Buck, Gridley, Kristen Dupuis and Werner. The Wildcats answered back with three straight to cut the lead back to 4-3, but Stony Brook would score three of the next four goals, including a pair by Leggio, to extend its lead back to three goals at 7-4 with 5:37 to play in the half.
UNH rallied once again as Katie Leland and Ashley Durepo netted back-to-back goals 32 seconds apart to bring the visitors back within a goal at 7-6 with 3:41 on the clock. The Seawolves would not give up that lead however, as Diana Caraleo converted a free position followed by goals by Gridley and Leggio to give Stony Brook a 10-6 edge at the break.
Moira Talbot's tally 1:15 into the second half got UNH back within three goals, but the Seawolves answered right back by scoring six of the next eight goals to push the advantage back to 16-9 with 6:15 remaining.
The Wildcats got back within five with 1:44 to play on back-to-back goals by Sarah Von Bargen and Durepo, but that's as close as they could get as the Seawolves defense halted the rally.
Von Bargen finished with a game-high six goals, while Leland added two goals and an assist for UNH. Ashley Milley took the loss after turning away five shots while allowing 13 goals over the first 41:39 of the contest. Lauren McMullen made one stop and allowed five goals in the final 18:21.
The Seawolves are back in action on Sunday when they host UMBC at 1 p.m.
