Final Stats
Freshman Kelsi Fanelli blasted a three-run home run in the second inning to propel the Stony Brook University softball team to a 5-2 victory over Hartford this afternoon at University Field.
With the win, the Seawolves are now 21-21 on the season, 6-6 in America East play.
Stony Brook wasted no time scoring a run in the bottom of the first inning. Fanelli led off the inning with a walk and advanced to second when Hayley Durham reached on a Hawk error. She then stole third base and came around to score on a Suzanne Turek RBI single.
The Hawks knotted the game at one run a piece when Kristen Cericola opened the second inning with a solo shot to centerfield.
In the bottom of the inning, the Seawolves scored three runs to grab a 4-1 advantage. Kelly Oberto reached on a fielder's choice and moved to second on a Laura Bradford single. That would bring up Fanelli, as she cracked a three-run shot to left field.
Hartford would chip away at the lead, scoring one run in the fifth on an RBI single by Kristie Rochette. Stony Brook added an insurance run in the six as Marissa Fleury led off the inning with a double down the left field line and would score on a Molly Kestranek RBI single.
Fanelli finished the game 1-2 with three RBI and two runs scored, while Bradford went 2-3 with a run scored. Turek and Kestranek each went 1-3 with an RBI.
Sarah Hoffman picked up the win on the mound for the Seawolves as she went the distance, scattering seven hits, allowing two earned runs while striking out six.
The Seawolves return to action when they travel to UMBC for a key conference three-game series with the Retrievers. First pitch on Saturday is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
