Softball Sweeps UMBC Twinbill

Baltimore, Md. - The Stony Brook softball team won a pair of games against UMBC on Saturday afternoon. The Seawolves won the opener, 4-2, and completed the sweep of the doubleheader with a 7-2 win in Game 2. With the two wins, the Seawolves improve to 23-21 overall and 9-8 in America East play.

In Game 1 Stony Brook jumped to a quick 2-0 lead when Marissa Fleury singled with the bases loaded to score Kelsi Fanelli and Hayley Durham in the top of the first inning.

The Retrievers responded in the third when Ward ripped a double down the left field line to plate a pair of runs and tie the game at 2-2.

Kelly Oberto led off the fourth with a walk and advanced to second following a Laura Bradford sacrifice. Following a Fanelli walk, a UMBC error allowed Ashley Westphal to reach and both Oberto and Fanelli to cross the plate to seal the Stony Brook win.

Sarah Hoffman threw a complete game in the win for Stony Brook, only allowing two runs off of three hits. Fleury led the charge in Game 1, going 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI.

In the second game, the Seawolves plated a pair of runs in the first when Suzanne Turek drew a bases-loaded walk and Sara Cerrone delivered the two-out RBI single to plate Durham and give Stony Brook an early 2-0 lead.

The scored remained 2-0 until the top of the fifth when the Seawolves scored five off of by back-to-back homers off the bats of Fanelli and Westphal and a three-run shot off the bat of Molly Kestranek.

UMBC would respond with two in the bottom of the inning, but Stony Brook starter Angela Andrews wouldn't allow another run in the contest.

Andrews picked up win in Game 2, throwing a complete game and only allowing two runs. Cerrone finished the second game 3-for-4 with one RBI, Fanelli was 2-for-4 with a home run and two runs scored, Westphal was 2-for-4 with a homer and Kestranek was 1-for-4 with the three-run shot.

The Seawolves return to action on Sunday when they conclude their series with UMBC at Noon.
