Tom Pennino delivered the two-out, game-winning RBI double in the bottom of the seventh inning as the Stony Brook baseball team defeated Binghamton, 8-3, on Friday afternoon. The win is the Seawolves' eighth in their past nine games as SBU improves to 8-15 overall and 1-0 in America East play. The loss drops the Bearcats to 10-9-1 and 0-1 in conference.
The Seawolves jumped out to an early 3-0 lead, when they plated three runs in the bottom of the second inning. With runners on first and second, Jon Pasieka ripped an RBI single to plate Peter Milani. Rob Leonard later scored on a fielder's choice and Pasieka crossed the plate on a passed ball to give Stony Brook the 3-0 advantage.
Binghamton responded, scoring a run in the top of the third and a pair of runs in the fourth, capped by a Jeff Wertepney RBI single.
The game remained scoreless until the seventh inning. With a runner on second and one out, Stony Brook head coach Matt Senk made a call to the bullpen. Gary Novakowski came in and induced a pair of groundouts to get Stony Brook out of a jam and send the game into the bottom of the inning all knotted up at three.
Leonard started the seventh inning rally for Stony Brook, leading off the frame with a single and advancing to third on a sacrifice bunt and a fly ball to center field. With two outs, Pennino ripped a Seth Rademacker pitch to the right-field gap to plate Leonard and give Stony Brook the lead.
The Seawolves would tack on four more runs in the eighth, capped by a Pasieka three-run blast over the left field fence.
Novakowski (2-1) pitched a scoreless ninth to seal the Stony Brook win. Novakowski threw 2.2 innings of perfect baseball and struck out three in the win. Tom Koehler got the start for Stony Brook and threw 6.1 innings of effective baseball, striking out nine and allowing only two earned runs.
Pasieka led the Stony Brook offense going 2-for-3 with four RBI and two runs scored. Leonard finished the day 2-for-3 with three runs scored and Chris Sipp went 2-for-4 with a run scored.
The Seawolves will continue their series with Binghamton with a doubleheader on Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 P.M.
