The Stony Brook softball team and the Binghamton Bearcats combined for a total of 43 hits and 36 runs as the teams split a doubleheader on Sunday afternoon. The Seawolves move to 17-17 overall and 3-3 in America East play. Binghamton is now 5-21 overall and 1-5 in conference play.
Binghamton got the best of the Seawolves in game 1, winning 14-6. The Bearcats opened up the scoring in the first inning, plating three runs off of three hits and a Stony Brook error.
Stony Brook answered, scoring two runs off of a Samantha Posey homerun to cut the lead to one. Binghamton would once again plate three runs in the bottom of the frame, capped by a Bieman double to plate Vitello.
Stony Brook responded with two more runs in the third, when Suzanne Turek singled in Marissa Fleury and Hayley Durham stole home. Binghamton, however, continued to pour on the offense, scoring three more runs in the third.
The Seawolves would cut the lead to 10-6, when Turek blasted a solo shot and Molly Kestranek scored on a Kelly Oberto sacrifice fly, but the Binghamton offense was too much.
Sarah Hoffman (5-7) shouldered the loss for Stony Brook, allowing six runs, three earned, in 1.2 innings of work. Turek finished the first game 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored. Oberto was 2-for-2 with an RBI.
In game 2, the Stony Brook offense plated 13 runs off of 11 hits as they only needed five innings to win, 13-3.
The Seawolves wasted no time, plating five runs in the top of the first capped by Posey's second home run of the day, a three-run shot to center field.
Durham hit a solo shot in the third and Stony Brook plated six runs in the fourth to give the Seawolves a 12-1 lead. In the fourth inning, Durham brought in a pair of runners with an RBI single and Turek added an RBI double as Stony Brook scored six.
Angela Andrews (10-7) pitched a complete game for Stony Brook, allowing only one earned run in the win. Kelsi Fanelli finished the game 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored, Durham was 2-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored and Posey went 1-for-2 with three driven in and two runs scored.
The Seawolves return to action on Wednesday, April 12 when they continue their road trip with a doubleheader at Hartford. First pitch is scheduled for 2:30 P.M.
