Stony Brook, N.Y. -
The Stony Brook baseball team dropped a pair of games to the visiting Binghamton Bearcats Sunday afternoon at University Field. The two losses drop the Seawolves to 8-16 overall and 1-2 in the America East. With the wins, Binghamton improves to 12-9-1 and 2-1 in AE play.
Stony Brook starter Mike Errigo and Binghamton starter Zach Groh squared off in a pitcher's dual in game 1. The Bearcats scored the only two runs of the game in the top of the seventh inning, when they strung together three singles and two runs, with the game-winning RBI single off the bat of Jeff Monaco to plate Justin Smucker.
Errigo (1-3) allowed only four hits and two runs in 6.1 innings of work, striking out four. Groh (3-0) stranded six Stony Brook baserunners and scattered five hits in the complete game shutout.
In game 2, Binghamton came out of the gates quickly, scoring four runs in the first three innings. Binghamton took advantage of two Stony Brook errors to grab the 4-0 lead.
Binghamton starter, Mike Van Gorder, held the Seawolves hitless through 4.2 innings of baseball before Tom Pennino delivered a two-out single. Pinch hitter Stephen Didsbury followed with a single through the right side to give the Seawolves two on with two outs. Chris Sipp reached base on a Binghamton error, scoring both Pennino and Didsbury to cut the lead in half.
The Seawolves would cut the lead to one run in the bottom of the sixth, when Andres Perez scored on an Isisdro Fortuna single to make the game 4-3.
Stony Brook threatened in the seventh, when Brian Witkowski came off the bench and ripped a pinch-hit single. Releif pitcher Jarod Rampey then induced the game ending 4-6-3 double play to seal the game for Binghamton.
Matt Restivo (0-4) shouldered the loss for Stony Brook, allowing only two earned runs and striking out four in 5.0 innings of work. Nick Abel threw 2.0 innings of shutout baseball in relief. Mike Van Gorder (2-1) picked up the win, allowing two runs and striking out three in 4.2 innings of work.
The Seawolves return to action on Tuesday, when they host Wagner in a non-conference match-up. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 P.M.
