Albany, N.Y. - Leo Corvino went 3-for-7 with a pair of RBI and scored three runs to lead UAlbany to a doubleheader sweep of Stony Brook in America East Conference baseball action on Saturday, May 13 at Varsity Field. The Great Danes, who have won four in a row and six of their last seven, took the opener, 4-2, and won the nightcap, 10-4.
In game one, UAlbany (17-28, AE 10-8) trailed 1-0 entering the home half of the first, but rallied for four runs in that frame. Second baseman Al Barbato and Corvino were hit by pitches to start the inning, while third baseman Steve Wyland reached on a bunt single to load the bases with no outs.
After Tom Hill grounded into a double play, which plated Barbato, Sean Donovan walked. First baseman Steve Sayre, who has 11 hits in his last seven games, followed with an RBI double down the left-field line to give his team a 2-1 advantage. Brad Daniels delivered an RBI single to second baseman Chris Sipp, who also committed a throwing error on the play, allowing Sayre to score and spotting UAlbany a 4-1 lead.
Stony Brook (18-27, AE 8-8) scored another run in the fifth, but could not solve UAlbany right-hander Casey Walsh (2-3), who allowed just two runs over six and two-thirds innings to pick up the win. The sophomore gave up seven hits, struck out six and walked three. Sean Gregory threw two and one-third shutout innings of relief to earn his first career save.
In the nightcap, UAlbany scored single runs in the first and second innings to take a 2-0 lead. The Seawolves cut the deficit in half with a run in the fourth with a sacrifice fly. Catcher Jon Pasieka later scored on an error by Donovan, giving Stony Brook a 3-2 lead.
The Great Danes took control of the game in the fourth, exploding for seven runs. Daniels drove in a run with a single to center, while Corvino delivered a two-run single in the inning. Pasieka's throwing error allowed two more runs to score and Sayre capped the outburst with a run-scoring single to give his team a 9-3 lead.
Each team added a run to make the score 10-4 and left-hander Mark Suchowiecki (5-4) went five and one-third innings to win his fourth straight decision. Donovan went 3-for-3 in the nightcap, while Rashad Barksdale had a hit and scored three runs.
