Maine Outslugs Stony Brook, 11-8

Burlington, Vt. - Maine utilized 17 hits to score 11 runs as the Stony Brook Seawolves fell 11-8 to the Black Bears in the opening game of the America East Tournament. The America East Tournament is double elimination and the Seawolves will take on the loser of the Albany/Vermont game tomorrow at 12:00 P.M.

Stony Brook and Maine traded the lead five times through the first four innings as the two squads were all knotted up at eight through four innings of play.

In the first four innings the two teams combined for 18 hits and six homeruns in the offensive explosion. Isidro Fortuna tallied two homeruns, including a three-run shot in the second, and Brian Witkowski, Andres Perez and Chris DiBiaso each hit solo shots for Stony Brook.

Sean Parker broke up the tie in the top of the seventh, when the Maine catcher recorded his fourth RBI and fourth single of the contest to plate Kevin McAvoy giving Maine the 9-8 lead in what ended up as the game-winning hit.

The Black Bears extended their lead to 10-8 in the eighth, when Ryan Quintal scored on a Curt Smith two-out RBI single.

Stony Brook threatened in the bottom of the frame, as DiBiaso and Fortuna each drew walks to give the Seawolves runners on first and second with one out. A.J. Balsinde came out of the pen to retire the next two Stony Brook batters to get out of the jam.

Maine added another run in the ninth, when Parker tallied his fifth RBI with a sacrifice fly to center to plate Matt Ostrander who led off the frame with a walk.

Balsinde worked a perfect ninth to seal the win and pick up his second save of the season.

Fortuna led the Stony Brook offense, going 2-for-3 with two homeruns, four RBI and three runs scored, DiBiaso was 2-for-2 with a solo shot and two runs scored and Perez was 2-for-5 with a solo blast.

Mike Errigo picked up the loss for Stony Brook, allowing one run in .2 innings.

The Seawolves return to action when they play the loser of the Vermont/Albany game tomorrow at 12:00 P.M.
