Box Score

Mike Gordon's layup as time expired was the difference as the Stony Brook men's basketball team was edged on the road at Binghamton, 66-65, at the Events Center on Wednesday night.

The loss drops Stony Brook to 7-15 overall and 2-8 in America East play. Binghamton improves to 10-12, 3-7.

"This is a tough loss for our team," said head coach Steve Pikiell. "I thought we made the stops down the stretch but we didn't hit the big shots when we needed to."

With 0.6 seconds left on the clock Gordon caught his own inbounds pass after it deflected off of a Stony Brook player and converted the layup to give the Bearcats a 66-65 win as the buzzer sounded.

The Seawolves built their lead to as many as 11 points in the second half when Ricky Lucas drained a pair of free-throws with 13:09 to play. Binghamton chipped away at the Stony Brook lead and eventually grabbed its first lead of the half at 59-57 when Steve Procter hit a jumper with 2:54 left in the game.

The two teams traded leads and a pair of Mitchell Beauford free-throws handed the Seawolves a three-point lead with :17 seconds left in the game at 65-62. On the ensuing possession Duane James grabbed an offensive rebound and converted for two to cut the Stony Brook lead to 65-64.

Lucas was fouled with :08 seconds to play but missed the front end of a one-and-one opportunity to give the Bearcats one last chance. With the ball out of bounds underneath the Binghamton basket, Gordon caught his own inbounds pass off of a Stony Brook player and hit the game-winning layup as time expired.

Beauford, America East Player of the Game, led the way for Stony Brook with 20 points and four assists. Lucas added 19 points and Andre Vanterpool scored 12 off the bench in the loss.

Gordon finished with 13 points and was named America East Player of the Game for Binghamton.

The Seawolves return to action on Saturday, February 3 when they hit the road to take on UMBC. Tip-off is slated for 7:00 p.m.
