Ricky Lucas and Mike Popoko combined to score 38 points as the Stony Brook men's basketball team beat New Hampshire, 67-49, at the Stony Brook University Arena on Sunday afternoon. Stony Brook snaps its two-game losing streak and moves to 9-17, 4-10 in conference play. New Hampshire is 9-18, 5-9.
"Our team showed up on the defensive end of the floor today," said head coach Steve Pikiell. "I'm very pleased with how Ricky and Mike played today. They showed veteran leadership in a key conference game."
After New Hampshire jumped out to an early 13-6 lead, Stony Brook used a 13-3 run to gain a three point advantage. Stony Brook lead by as much as six in the first half and took a 29-27 lead into the locker room after Jermaine Anderson hit a three as the halftime buzzer sounded.
After Dan McGeary hit a three to give New Hampshire a 33-32 lead, the Wildcats went scoreless for just under six minutes. New Hampshire eventually only scored nine points in a seven-minute span in which Stony Brook opened up a decisive 19-point advantage.
Lucas lead the Seawolves with 22 points and eight rebounds and was named America East co-player of the game. Mike Popoko added 16 points. Stony Brook outrebounded New Hampshire 44-32 and got 16 points off the bench including eight from Solomon Bamiro.
Anderson and McGeary combined to score 39 of the Wildcats 49 points on Sunday. Anderson (20 points) was named America East co-player of the game. Wildcats' leading scorer Blagoj Janev was held scoreless.
Stony Brook's next game is on Thursday, February 22 when it hosts Albany. Thursday's game is Senior Night and marks the last home game for Solomon Bamiro, Andre Vanterpool, Mike Popoko and John Henkel.
