Mitchell Beauford scored a game-high 20 points but it was not enough as Albany shot 50 percent (10-20) from behind the arc to top the Stony Brook men's basketball team, 66-46, at the Stony Brook University Arena on Thursday night. Stony Brook falls to 9-18, 4-11 in conference play while Albany is 19-9, 12-3.
"It's unfortunate for our four seniors that their careers in front of their home fans had to end like this," said head coach Steve Pikiell. "Their effort and desire will be missed and is greatly appreciated."
After Albany was held scoreless early in the game, the Great Danes scored on their next six possessions to open up a 15-4 lead. After Beauford scored from inside the paint, the Seawolves went the next five minutes without a bucket until Ricky Lucas hit two free throws with 6:05 left. Albany closed out the half with a 10-2 run to open up its biggest lead of the half and went into the locker room with a 37-17 lead. Albany shot 52 percent in the first half and went 6-8 from downtown. The Seawolves struggled from the charity stripe as they shot 3-10 from the free throw line in the opening stanza.
Albany shot out with a quick 7-2 run to open up the second half, giving them its biggest lead up to that point, 44-19. Stony Brook got within 18 points following a layup from Rio Pitt at 48-30 but Stony Brook could get no closer as it fell 66-46.
Beauford scored 10 points in each half to finish with 20 and was named America East co-player of the game. Lucas and Pitt each added seven points.
Jamar Wilson scored 19 points and six assists for Albany and was named America East co-player of the game. Jason Siggers added 15 points and seven rebounds and Brian Lillis had 11 points and seven rebounds.
Stony Brook concludes the regular season when it travels to face Maine on Sunday afternoon. Tip-off is scheduled for 1 pm.
