Kurt Jung threw seven solid innings and Brian Witkowski drove in a pair of runs as the Stony Brook baseball team topped Nicholls State, 7-3, on Sunday afternoon. With the win the Seawolves move to 2-7 on the year.
Stony Brook jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead after two innings of play. The Seawolves scored a run in the top of the first inning and added two more in the second when Witkowski and Chris Sipp hit back-to-back RBI singles with two outs.
The Seawolves would expand their lead to 7-0 as they took advantage of three Colonel errors in the fifth to add three runs and tacked on the final run in the sixth following three straight two-out singles from Rob Leonard, Steven Mazzurco and Chris Cruz.
Nicholls State added a run in the seventh and two in the eighth, but the pitching combo of Jung and Matt Lyons held on for the win.
Jung (1-2) only allowed three hits and one run in 7.0 innings of work. Lyons struck out two batters in 2.0 innings to close out the game.
Witkowski finished the game 2-for-2 with two RBI and a run scored, Cruz was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and Mazzurco was 2-for-5 with a run scored in the win.
The Seawolves return to action on Wednesday, March 14 when they take on Seton Hall. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
