St. Mary's Sandra Ruezga scored on a single in the bottom of the seventh to lift St. Mary's to a 9-8 victory over the Stony Brook softball team on Sunday morning. Stony Brook is 7-6.
The Seawolves scored on the first at-bat of the game when Ashley Westphal homered. Stony Brook continued its offensive attack, scoring five runs in the top of the second giving SB a 6-0 lead. Sara Cerrone had a two-run double and Kelsi Fanelli had a two-run single highlighting the inning.
After St. Mary's scored two right back in the bottom of the inning, Stony Brook took an 8-2 lead in the top of the fourth off the bat of Westphal's second home run of the game. Fanelli scored later in the inning when Marissa Fleury singled her home.
The Gaels answered back with a four-spot in the bottom of the inning highlighted by a three-run homer from Lauren Clark. St. Mary's scored two in the sixth to tie the score and one in the seventh for the win.
Westphal and Fanelli were named to the all-tournament team
Stony Brook is back in action when it takes on NCAA tournament teams in Hofstra and East Carolina and St. John's at the Hofstra Invitational. First pitch against East Carolina is set for 10 am on Saturday.
