March 14, 2007

Box Score

South Orange, N.J. - The Seawolves scored a pair of runs in the eighth inning as the Stony Brook baseball team edged Seton Hall, 3-1, on Wednesday afternoon. Gary Novakowski and Jon Kalkau only allowed one run off of six hits in the win. With the win Stony Brook moves to 3-7 and Seton Hall falls to 5-9.

All knotted up in a pitcher's duel early, Stony Brook was able to score the game's first run in the top of the seventh inning. After loading the bases with two hit batters and a bunt single off the bat of Rob Leonard, Steven Mazzurco drove in the games first run with an RBI single.

Seton Hall answered in the bottom of the frame when the Pirates plated a run off of Stony Brook starter Novakowski with a sacrifice fly.

The Seawolves took the lead for good when Keith Fier scored on a wild pitch and Chris Sipp hit a sacrifice fly to plate Jusin Echevarria. Kalkau pitched 2.1 innings of shutout baseball to pick up the win in relief as Stony Brook held on for the 3-1 win.

Fier and Echevarria each went 1-for-3 with a run scored in the win. Novakowski allowed one run off of five hits in 6.2 innings in a no decision. Kalkau (1-0) threw 2.1 innings of shutout baseball to pick up his first win of the year.

The Seawolves will return to action this Saturday when they travel to La Salle for a doubleheader. The games were originally scheduled to be played at Stony Brook, but due to inclement weather the games have been moved to La Salle. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
