Seniors Sarah Hoffman and Christina Voth each threw complete game shutouts as Stony Brook swept Army, 12-0 and 8-0, at the University Field on Wednesday Afternoon. The Seawolves are 10-8 and have won two in a row. Army falls to 6-21.
After Stony Brook took a 2-0 lead, Stony Brook broke the game open with an eight-run third, all of which came with two outs. With the bases loaded, Sara Cerrone singled through the hole into left field driving in Kelly Oberto and Marissa Fleury. Following an Ashley Westphal RBI single and an error scoring Sara Cerrone, Kelsi Fanelli hit a three run homer to left center. Fanelli and Marissa Fleury went back-to-back when Fleury homered to right field. The eight-run third inning gave the home team a commanding 10-0 lead. Stony Brook scored two runs in the fourth.
Hoffman was spectacular retiring the first 13 batters in the game. After Veronica Barth reached on a single, Hoffman got the final two outs of the game for her fifth win of the season.
In game two, Voth went the distance tossing a three-hitter for the Seawolves second consecutive shutout.
With two on and one out in the bottom of the first, Fleury hit a three-run home run to center to give the Seawolves a 3-0 lead. Stony Brook added runs in the second, third and fourth innings to win going away, 8-0. The Seawolves out-hit Army 21-4 in the doubleheader.
Stony Brook returns to the field tomorrow when it hosts Manhattan in a doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 2 pm.
