Softball Wins Fourth In A Row With Sweep Over Manhattan

Stony Brook, N.Y. - Christina Voth retired all eight batters she faced in relief as Stony Brook beat Manhattan, 3-2, in game one of a doubleheader against Manhattan. The Seawolves bested Manhattan in game two, 8-0, in five innings. Stony Brook has won four in a row and goes to 12-8. Manhattan is 1-19.

After three innings of shutout ball, both teams scored a run in the fourth. After Samantha Posey got on with a walk and Molly Kestranek bunted her over to second, Kelly Oberto had an RBI double driving in Posey and tying the score at one.

After Voth relieved Seawolves' starter Alyssa Struzenberg and runners were on first and third with one out, Voth threw a wild pitch allowing Devon Gustafson to score. Voth regained her composure and struck out Lyndzie Phillips and Danielle Just to keep the damage to a minimum.

Stony Brook used the momentum as Marissa Fleury had a clutch, two run single to right field to drive in Kelsi Fanelli and Vicki Kavitsky in the bottom of the inning.

Voth struck out six of the eight batters she faced, striking out the side in the sixth and retired the side in order in the seventh for her fourth win of the season.

In game two, Sarah Hoffman threw her second consecutive complete-game shutout as Stony Brook beat Manhattan, 8-0, in five innings.

The Seawovles led 2-0 after four and half innings when they finally broke it open. After Sara Cerrone singled to center and Ashley Westphal sacrificed her to second, Kavitsky singled to center driving in Cerrone. After Fanelli flied out to left, Fleury doubled to right field scoring Kavitsky and giving the Seawolves a 4-0 lead. After Posey singled and Kestranek was hit by the pitch, loading the bases, Oberto drew an RBI walk. Following a wild pitch and an error on the same sequence that saw Posey and Kestranek score, Oberto scored on an error committed by the shortstop of the bat of Jade Clare.

Hoffman picked up her team-leading sixth win the season is now 6-2.

Stony Brook opens up America East play when it faces Vermont in a doubleheader on Saturday, March 31. The first game is scheduled for 12 pm.
