The Stony Brook baseball team was held to only four hits as the Seawolves were edged, 2-1, by NYIT on Friday afternoon. Tom Koehler pitched 7.0 solid innings, striking out 10 in the loss. With the loss the Seawolves move to 4-10 overall and NYIT moves to 5-10.
Tom Murray delivered the game-winning RBI with a two-out single in the bottom half of the seventh inning to hand NYIT a 2-1 lead. Murray gave the Bears an early 1-0 lead when Kraig Binick scored in the bottom of the first when Murray hit into a double-play.
Stony Brook evened the game at 1-1 in the third when Chris Cruz scored on Justin Echevarria's infield single.
The story of the day was pitching. Koehler and NYIT starter Joe Esposito each struck out 10 batters on the day as they kept the other team in check. Despite chances to break the game open, both pitchers buckled down when it mattered as the Seawolves left eight runners on base and the Bears left nine.
Koehler (1-4) picked up a hard luck loss, striking out 10 and allowing only two runs in 7.0 innings of work. Esposito (1-3) threw a complete game, striking out 10 and allowing only four hits.
Echevarria was 2-for-4 with an RBI on the day.
The Seawolves return to action tomorrow when they host NYIT for a doubleheader at University Field. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
