The Stony Brook baseball team split a pair of games with NYIT on Saturday afternoon at University Field. With the split the Seawolves move to 6-11 on the year and NYIT moves to 5-11. With the win in Game 2 the Seawolves snapped NYIT's five game winning streak.
In Game 1, NYIT jumped out to an early 3-0 lead after scoring two runs in the third and one in the fourth capped by an unearned run in the top of the fourth.
The Seawolves answered with a pair of their own in the bottom half of the fourth when Chris Cruz singled in Chris Sipp and Michael Stephan to cut the lead to 3-2.
NYIT added an insurance run in the top of the fifth and Joe Eichorn pitched a perfect seventh for the save as the Bears held on for the 4-2 win.
Gary Novakowski (0-1) shouldered the loss, allowing five runs, two earned, in 7.0 innings. He struck out nine batters on the day.
Cruz finished the day 1-for-2 with two RBI.
In Game 2, Stony Brook starter Jon Kalkau and NYIT hurler Eric Johnson were locked in an early pitcher's duel. The Seawolves were able to plate the games first runs in the bottom of the fourth when Steven Mazzurco doubled in Stephan and later scored on a Bear error.
NYIT answered with a run in the top of the sixth and looked to add more. With the bases loaded and one out, Marc Brown tallied back-to-back strikeouts to end the threat as NYIT stranded three baserunners.
The Bears threatened again in the top of the seventh when they loaded the bases with no outs off of two Stony Brook errors and a hit batsman. Matt Lyons came out of the pen and retired the next three batters as Stony Brook held on for the 2-1 win.
Kalkau (2-0) picked up the win, striking out nine batters in 5.0 innings. Lyons earned his first save of the year retiring three of the four batters he faced.
Mazzurco led the offense in Game 2, going 2-for-3 with an RBI double and a run scored.
The Seawolves return to action tomorrow when they conclude their series with NYIT in Old Westbury, N.Y. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
