Stony Brook, N.Y. -
Sara Cerrone's three-run homer in the bottom of the second inning propelled the Stony Brook Softball team to a 9-0 win over Hartford in five innings. The Hawks came back to win, 1-0, in game two that featured a pitcher's duel between Brittney Stratton and Alyssa Struzenberg. Stony Brook is 18-10 on the season, 6-2 in conference play. Hartford is 14-15, 4-3.
Stony Brook scored three runs in the bottom of the second inning and added four more in the third. Kelsi Fanelli tripled to right with one out and scored on Samantha Posey's RBI single. Marissa Fleury who was hit by a pitch one batter before moved to second. Molly Kestranek followed with a tapper to the mound which the pitcher threw away. Fleury would come around to score on the error. With two outs, Jade Clare lined a single down the third-base line driving in Kestranek and Posey.
Stony Brook also scored two runs in the fourth.
Sarah Hoffman threw a complete-game five hit shutout, pushing her record to 8-3 on the season. The win also gave her 37 for her career, putting her second on the all-time career wins list.
Gina Massaro took the loss for Hartford.
In game two, Struzenberg had a career-high 11 strikeouts but it was not enough as Hartford salvaged a tie with a 1-0 win.
Stratton tossed a two-hitter for the Hawks.
Struzenberg is now 4-2 on the season.
Stony Brook is back in action on Saturday, April 14 with a three-game set against first-place Boston University. Game one of the doubleheader on Saturday is set for 1 pm.
