Sarah Hoffman threw a complete-game one hitter with six strikeouts to help lead Stony Brook to a five inning shutout of Iona, 8-0 in game one of a doubleheader. The Seawolves mounted a valiant comeback in game two, scoring three runs in the bottom of the seventh but fell, 6-4. Stony Brook is 20-12 on the season while Iona is 7-15.
Hoffman was dominant in game one, allowing just two base runners all game. Stony Brook provided Hoffman with a solid game at the plate.
Ashley Westphal led off the inning for Stony Brook with a walk and stolen base. Marissa Fleury lined a single to center to drive in Westphal.
Westphal and Fleury each scored runs for Stony Brook in the third.
In the fifth inning, Stony Brook broke open the game. After Samantha Posey doubled in Kelsi Fanelli who walked to lead off the inning, Molly Kestranek, Kelly Oberto and Jade Clare recorded consecutive walks. Stony Brook took a 5-0 lead after the sequence and a 6-0 after Sara Cerrone was hit by a pitch. Game one would end when Westphal laced a double just inside the third base line, driving in Oberto and Clare.
Hoffman picked up her ninth win of the season in the victory.
In game two, Fleury hit a two-run homer and Kestranek also homered in the bottom of the seventh but the Seawolves fell, 6-4.
Iona was the beneficiary of three solo home runs off the bat of Lexi Garbowski in game two.
Stony Brook had the tying run at bat in its half of the seventh after Kelly Oberto walked but Jade Clare was retired.
Stony Brook is back in action tomorrow with a non-conference doubleheader against St. Peter's. Game one is set for 3 pm.
