Seawolves Baseball Sweeps Doubleheader Over UAlbany

Stony Brook, N.Y. - The Stony Brook baseball team swept a doubleheader over UAlbany on Saturday afternoon at University Field on the campus of Stony Brook University. The Seawolves rallied for seven early runs as they won Game 1, 7-4, and behind home runs from Jeremy Nowak and Michael Stephan won Game 2, 8-4. With the two wins the Seawolves improve to 17-15 overall and 8-2 in America East. UAlbany moves to 14-19, 1-6.

In Game 1, the Seawolves tallied eighth hits and scored seven runs in the first two innings of play to open up a 7-0 lead. With two outs in the bottom of the first, Stephan sparked a rally as the Seawolves hit for five consecutive hits with two-outs capped by a Chris Cruz double as they led 4-0. In the bottom of the second inning the Seawolves scored all three runs with two outs as Rob Leonard and Michael Tansey delivered RBI singles.

The Great Danes added two in the fourth off of a Steve Sayre RBI single and two in the sixth, but Matt Lyons came out of the pen to close out the sixth and seventh inning for his third save of the year. Gary Novakowski (3-1) picked up the win, striking out five batters in 5.1 innings of work. Leonard and Tansey were both 3-for-3 as the Seawolves tallied 10 hits in the win.

In Game 2, Stony Brook broke a 3-1 game open with a three run fourth. Leading 3-1 heading into the fourth, Nowak ripped an RBI double to the fence to plate Steven Mazzurco and later scored on a Great Dane error. With one-out, Chris Sipp hit an RBI single to plate Keith Fier as the Seawolves led 6-1 through four innings of play.

The Great Danes kept things interesting as they plated three runs in the fifth capped by a Sayre RBI single to center, but Stony Brook would respond with two runs in the bottom half of the inning as the Seawolves held on to win, 8-4.

Jon Kalkau (4-0) allowed four runs in five innings and struck out seven in the win. Lyons and Marc Brown pitched a scoreless sixth and seventh inning as the Seawolves completed the sweep. Nowak finished the game 2-for-3 with a solo home run and an RBI double, Stephan was 1-for-3 with a solo home run and Fier was 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored.

The Seawolves will conclude their series with the Great Danes on Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
